Doctoral Programmes in Business and Management
Our doctoral programmes in Management are central MMU research activity and cover all management domains. To date, over 100 candidates have successfully submitted a PhD thesis in management at MMU.
Currently, 75 students are registered for research degrees and MMUBS is recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for both full-time and part-time students (1 + 3 and +3). This recognition serves as an important quality indicator for our programmes. It also enables likely candidates who qualify for our programmes to apply to the ESRC for a Research Studentship to support both their fees and subsistence.
We are also an active member of EDAMBA (European Doctoral Association for Management and Business Administration) and each year, doctoral candidates can apply competitively for places on the acclaimed EDAMBA Summer Schools.
We offer the facility to study for PhD, MPhil and MRes degrees in Management on either a full-time or part-time basis. One of our key objectives is to ensure that our graduates are skilled in research methodologies beyond their own project applications. To this end, all candidates are trained in research methodology and methods by completing an MRes (Master of Research Methods) before progressing through MPhil (Master of Philosophy) to PhD (Doctor of Philosophy) registration.
We emphasise the importance of preparing candidates to make significant contributions in their senior management and academic careers. They engage in seminars at which they present their own research, an annual symposium and conference papers. Further, the doctoral programme manages the coordination of the review and production processes for the MMU Management Working Paper Series.
All students registered for a research degree in management are Affiliate members of the MMU Research Institute for Business and Management (RIBM). As such, they are integrated into domain-centred research groups, through which they become familiar with the wider management research activity at MMU, attend research seminars and gain further insight and involvement in the process and outcomes of management research. Thus candidates are supported specifically by their own supervision team and also through access to our wider research community.
