Supportive Research Training
All our MPhil/PhD students are required to study for the Masters of Research (MRes). Exceptions are only made if applicants are already qualified in ESRC equivalent research training programme at Masters level. MA/MSc (by Research) students are expected to follow one of our Master's Methodology Programmes.
The MRes Programme is not separate from the PhD, but provides the research training (in accordance with ESRC guidelines) necessary to conduct doctoral study.
The MRes Programme introduces students to the various dimensions of the research process, the philosophy of research methodology, methods, research skills and a critique of the disciplinary domain in which the student intends to study. The Programme has the added benefit of providing a support network for those new to, or returning to, study.
The programme is delivered in block sessions during term time and consists of taught sessions and workshop sessions. The taught session offers students knowledge and information on a particular aspect of research; the workshop offers the opportunity to develop the researcher’s practical skills.
Enrolled students who are studying full-time are expected to develop their research proposal during the first two terms, those studying part-time are allowed longer. All our students are able to take post-graduate modules related to their substantive area of research from any of the courses running in the Faculty which are thought to be helpful to their studies.
Throughout the year students present their research at seminars and at the MMUBS Annual Doctoral Symposium.
Application Procedure
On completion and return of the application form a decision will be made as to whether or not we can provide suitable supervision for your research. If we can, you will be invited for interview (or if overseas, your interview will be conducted by telephone.
