Centre for Hospitality and Employment Research (CHER) - Current Projects

Employment relations in the hospitality and tourism industries.

Much of this draws from new data sets from WERS, and will be published in a forthcoming book by Routledge in the Employment Relations Series in December 2003.

Adjusting to the NMW in the hospitality and clothing industries.

This longitudinal project began in 1997 two years before the NMW was introduced. Five waves of interviews have been completed, most recently in the summer 2002. Wave six is taking place in October 2003. Findings from the first two waves informed one of four research projects commissioned by the Low Pay Commission between 1999 and 2001.

Student employment in Bulgaria, Hungary and Slovakia.

Working with researchers in partner institutions in Sofia, Budapest and Banska Bystrica, data about the nature of part-time student employment has been obtained and compared with UK practice. This research has been undertaken in conjunction with, and is funded by, the ICRC in the Faculty of Food, Clothing and Hospitality Management.

HRM in Bulgarian and Slovakian hotels.

The first stage of research, based on interviews with a sample of Slovakian hotels, was completed in 2001. An article has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of Human Resource Management. For the second stage, interviews in 50 Bulgarian hotels were undertaken in Spring/Summer 2003 and are currently being analysed. This project is also funded by the ICRC.
